Gothia Cup Reduces Climate Footprint – By Switching Milk

Gothia Cup’s change of milk supplier has resulted in a climate saving equivalent to traveling 24,500 kilometers by car.

– We want to create conditions for a better future – for the individual, the tournament, and our planet, says Fredrik Andersson, Sustainability Manager at Gothia Cup.

In line with the sustainability initiative Celebrate the Planet, Gothia Cup is taking steps to reduce the tournament's climate impact. Earlier this year, Norrmejerier became an official partner of both Gothia Cup and Partille World Cup. The dairy products from Norrland are served at both the players' accommodations and the playing fields. The partnership with Norrmejerier means Gothia Cup takes further steps to reduce its climate and environmental impact that comes with having tens of thousands of participants. The partnership between Norrmejerier and BK Häcken, the organizers of Gothia Cup, is based on a shared commitment to sustainable development. Norrmejerier was the exclusive supplier of dairy products, including cheese, to all school cafeterias during the tournament.
– Our goal is to annually measure and reduce our carbon footprint per participant. At the same time, we want to serve healthy and responsibly produced food with minimal environmental impact. Thanks to our collaboration with Norrmejerier, we were able to reduce our CO2 emissions by 6.5 tons during this year's two tournaments – simply by switching milk, says Fredrik Andersson.

The milk provided by Norrmejerier has a lower climate footprint already from the farm – and it’s precisely on the farms that the biggest differences in climate impact are found. Here, Norrmejerier has a 25 percent lower climate footprint compared to the average milk in Sweden.
– Switching to Norrlogisk milk is a simple but effective step towards achieving sustainability goals, especially for municipalities and larger organizations with ambitious environmental goals, Norrlogisk could have a significant impact. A seemingly small change but with a large impact on the climate, says Stina Printz, Sustainability Manager at Norrmejerier.
