Gothia Cup starts a new tournament in Mexico
Gothia Cup expands across the Atlantic Ocean. In January 2023, the first edition of Gothia Cup Cancun will be played. - Mexico is a genuine football country, and it feels extra fun to be able to implement the new tournament now, to be able give the youths hope and faith about the future again, after such a long lock down due to the pandemic, says Dennis Andersson, general secretary at Gothia Cup.
Gothia Cup was first held in Gothenburg, 1975. Since then, the youth football tournament has grown into Sweden’s largest yearly event and into the world’s largest youth tournament, with approximately 1700 participating teams from around 80 nations each year.
The Gothia Cup mission – to create a meeting place for youths to increase knowledge and understanding of each other - has set a long-term goal of expanding the tournament to all continents. In 2016, the first edition of Gothia Cup China was played, and the Gothia Cup organization has been working for several years to realize the next tournament in Mexico, together with long-term partners in the country.
When the pandemic hit the plans were put on hold, but now Gothia Cup can proudly announce that the first edition of Gothia Cup Cancun will be played in January, 2023. The tournament is open for girls and boys, 11-16 years old and all teams will stay at the same hotel, the Grand Oasis in Cancun.
It will mostly be North and South American teams that participate in the first year, which will be a kind of pilot tournament. In the long run, our hope is that teams from all over the world will participate in Cancun. It is about creating a meeting place for the youths, just like in Gothenburg, says Dennis Andersson.
