This Girl Kicks from Worcestershire won their first playoff match. –We're so afraid for the next round but the whole week has been all fun.
The only team representing Wales this year is This Girl Kicks, the team plays in the G17-category. Today they played their first playoff match and with a 3-0 victory they got a great start. The team is from Worcestershire which lies approximately 1100 km from Gothenburg.
After a close game they won their first playoff match scoring three goals, one with four minutes left of the match – and the other two in over time.
– It's exciting to win the first knockout game. We're so afraid for the next round but the whole week has been all fun, Skye Hipkiss says.
The team have several partner clubs that they met up with before the tournament started. They spent time with Öjersjö IF, Landvetter IF and NJ14 gathering girls from Sweden, Wales and USA allowing the girls to get new friends and a social experience that goes far beyond football.
– Before Gothia Cup we had a pre-tournament with a couple of friendly matches leading up to the tournament, so that was exciting, Lily Naylor explains.
As the only team from Wales they represented their country during the opening ceremony dressed in Welsh Bucket hats – walking behind the red dragon tapered on the Welsh flag.
– It's such a great experience to be able to represent Wales, especially how we did it in the opening ceremony, it was a great feeling, Lily continues.
